The Founder of Brauerei Fahr
Jochen Fahr, PhD
Jochen Fahr, PhD

Jochen Fahr was born and raised in Ebringen, Germany, a small village of 300 residents, pictured above. With his father working at the Fürstenberg brewery in nearby Donaueschingen, Jochen found his passion for brewing early on and learned the ways of agriculture from childhood. This knowledge of brewing and appreciation for local farming reconverged in Calgary – halfway around the globe – when Jochen started Brauerei Fahr with the goal of providing the Canadian consumer with authentic German beer.

Brewing beer was a hobby that became an obsession that turned into passion.

Jochen landed in Calgary in 2008 to complete his Bachelors of Engineering in Biotechnology. In fact, this undergraduate degree was focused on industrial biotechnology with a goal of using microorganisms like yeast and bacteria for industrial processes, such as ethanol production. Shortly after graduation, he started his Masters of Science in Medical Sciences, but fast-tracked into a biomedical engineering PhD degree, which he finished in 2013.

Academics aside, Jochen worked in medical and industrial fields but fermented his passion for beer by brewing at home. He put his engineering skills to work, setting up an automated brewing system. Using this system, he won several medals in home brewing competitions.

Having rounded out his professional experience in business, science and engineering, Jochen took the leap in 2015 to make Brauerei Fahr Inc. a full-time endeavour. With a knack for entrepreunership, a passion for great beer, a couple of award-winning home recipes and a very understanding wife, he is currently laying the groundwork to establish Brauerei Fahr in Turner Valley, AB.
